For most of the developed world, we have shelter, food, and general safety. With our basic needs met, we no longer need to toil all day hunting or gathering for food, nor do we need to nurture the animals we rear for their milk, eggs, and eventually meat. We have become estranged from the world we live in. We now hunt animals for sport, abuse them for non-essential non-sustenance foods like fois gras and sharks fin, factory farm them with no concern at all for their welfare.
